This document was generated at the request of Senator Terry C. Burton for the purpose of providing an overview of tax revenue by source in the State of Mississippi. A comprehensive econometric and policy analysis of revenues, expenditures, and the impact of change to these variables is beyond the scope of this report. This report does not make any policy recommendations; it is intended to provide decision-makers with an overview of revenues and expenditures related to alcoholic beverages in the State of Mississippi and to provide a comparative framework in a concise format.

The John C. Stennis Institute of Government prepared this document to provide information to the Mississippi State Legislature’s House Ways and Means Committee. The purpose of this document is to describe the sources of revenues to the State of Mississippi’s General Revenue Fund and changes to these revenues from 2005 to 2007. The document also provides relative comparisons between Mississippi and U.S. sources of revenue per capita and relative comparisons between Mississippi revenue sources per capita and those of other states in the U.S. At the request of Representative John L. Moore, additional data has been provided on revenue sources as a percentage of per capita Personal Income for each state, using state per capita Personal Income for the third Quarter of 2007.
